Making the Switch to Dedicated Construction Management Software

June 30th, 2009

Wondering if now is the right time to make the switch from a generic project management software package to a dedicated construction software package? There is never a clear answer, and your decision will largely depend on how much you want to go from simply recording job data to proactively managing jobs, deadlines and costs.

Here are some questions to ask yourself or from your company before making the switch.

Upgrading your software will cost you money – more money than you think. Beyond the actual cost of the software, you need to be prepared to provide the funding for training. If you aren’t prepared for the investment in intense training on top of the software price, now may not be the time to switch.

Further, are you committed to spending the time to get all the data input in to the system that will allow you to get data from the system that will allow you to look at past performance? If not, the software’s capabilities will be limited.

Also consider why you’re considering new software in the first place. Have you had bad job experiences that resulted from poor tracking? Do you currently have real-time job cost tracking? Or do you want new software just because it seem like a good idea?

Progress billings are another thing to consider. Do you create them separately from your accounting system and need a way to integrate them? Does your current system ensure that all costs incurred are billed? Do you need a way to automate that process?

What about purchasing controls? Does your current system monitor your committed costs in relation to your estimated costs?

Are you currently using spreadsheets for your estimating? Would you benefit from a more powerful estimating system or are you getting by just fine with what you currently use?

Have you recently had management changes? One of the biggest reasons that companies switch software is that a new set of management comes in and recognizes the need for a better software system. Sometimes, new management is brought is specifically for that purpose.

Other things to consider are the growth rate or predicted growth rate of your company. Will your current software be able to keep up?

Finally, you need to consider how much you can justify spending to acquire new timberline software. If you can’t afford an initial investment of around 2-3% of your current net revenues, you may want to delay the expense. On the other hand, if the additional benefits of real-time data reporting will dramatically increase your net revenues, the steep up front cost may be worth it.

If you’ve decided that new software is right for you, you need to figure out how you’ll find the best software for your company. A quick web search will point you to more software that “looks” like it will work than you can possibly sort through. The challenge becomes creating a short list of potential packages and then making a final decision. Of course, many companies struggle with step 1 – getting the short list. This is where it can be hugely beneficial to check out construction software reviews that will allow you see beyond the marketing hype that all vendors apply to their products. What this really means is that you need to find a person or a team with the capability to perform this difficult task.

Picking the right person to head up the search for new software should be done with care. Don’t pick somebody simply because they have the most free time or will be the cheapest. Likewise, stay away from people that don’t have experience working directly with construction software, like accountants.

The best choice for your software selector is somebody in your company that understands both the accounting and operational sides of your business, has strong communication skills, and is trusted by upper management.

The Courage to be Wrong

June 30th, 2009
Comments Off

Chihuahua with mohawk

I used to think being “right” was a big deal.

I had to say the right thing, dress the right way, know the right people, read the right books, live in the right neighborhood, go to the right school. It wasn’t because I wanted to, exactly, but because I thought it was a prerequisite for success.

If you want other people to respect you, then you have to look and sound a certain way, right? Makes sense, if conformity is all you’ve ever been taught.

What no one tells you is the cost. Yes, conformity gains you a certain type of approval from others, but it comes at the cost of losing your sense of self.

You have to systematically search out everything that’s a little bit “off” about you and bury it as deep as you can. You know that you can’t get rid of it — it’s a part of you, after all — but maybe you can hide it so deep that no one will ever see it, so that a world that only respects the “right” will never realize how “wrong” you really are.

Maybe, just maybe, you can fool everyone until you’re in a position of power and no one’s opinion matters anymore. Then you can be free. Right?

Umm… no.

The Power of Misfits

The people we pay attention to aren’t the masters of doing what’s “right;” they’re the misfits who have the courage to be wrong. They take whatever everyone else is doing in their industry and turn it inside out.

It’s not just about differentiation; it’s about perverting the norm, destroying sacred traditions, and screwing with the way people think. It’s about doing, saying, or living something that’s so completely unexpected that people can’t help but pay attention.

It’s about realizing that most people spend their lives breathing stale, recycled air, and then spending the remainder of your life finding and opening windows to make that air new again.

  • Who would’ve thought a movie that told a story backwards would become a cult classic that people would talk about for decades? But that’s what Christopher Nolan did with Memento.
  • Who would’ve thought paintings consisting of nothing more than splattered paint would sell for millions of dollars? But that’s what Jackson Pollock did with his art.
  • Who would’ve thought a Jewish guy from the UK would become famous by playing an anti-Semitic, socially-retarded Kazakh? But that’s what Sacha Baron Cohen did with Borat.

The one trait they all have in common: the courage to be wrong.

The Fallacy of Right and Wrong

By saying “wrong,” I’m not saying you should pander for attention, make lewd jokes, or otherwise do something bad. What I’m saying is you need to realize “right” and “wrong” exist only between quotation marks. Every day, the world decides their definition, and every day, we have the opportunity to influence what that definition becomes.

Revolutionaries don’t just burn the rules. They write new ones. In destroying the standard, they create the standard. It’s creative destruction at its finest.

Will some people dislike you? Sure, that’s the way it works. Real leaders are willing, even eager, to be disliked and even hated, not because it makes them feel important, but because they know it’s the price of change, and no one can pay that price but them.

Do you have that kind of courage?

If not, it pays to find it. No one pays attention to a coward for very long.

And if all you do is what’s “right,” then a coward is exactly what you become.

5 Traits of Successful Internet Marketers

June 30th, 2009

Given the rise in popularity of internet marketing, wouldn’t it be great to know exactly what it takes to be successful at such an endeavour? Here are 5 traits of successful internet marketers. How do you measure up? Go to internet marketing toronto for more information.

1. Broad Knowledge Base. A successful internet marketer should be, at the very least, a well-rounded person. He should have a wide base of general knowledge and be able to use that knowledge to his advantage by drawing on it to come up with new and innovative ideas. Critical thinking and problem solving skills are a must since the prime tasks involves analyzing problems and finding solutions to them.

A background in English is particularly helpful since a successful internet marketer must be a master with words and know how to tell and use stories. A successful internet marketer understands design and how humans are influenced by what they see. He must understand basic human motivation and behaviour, so a rudimentary understanding of psychology is key.

Finally, a successful internet marketer understands interpersonal relationships, and how those relationships function given the rise of social media.

2. Technologically Proficient. A successful internet marketer doesn’t have to know everything there is to know about internet technology, but he should have a fundamental understanding of databases, HTML, Flash, style sheets, and a programming language for the web such as PHP. This sort of understanding is necessary if an internet marketer is going to have a firm grasp on how search engines and the Web work together. Most of all, the successful internet marketer should be pretty fascinated with technology and have a desire to use the latest online tools whenever they become available.

The successful internet marketer should have a realistic view of the capabilities of technology and, most of all, he should be cognizant of their potential. He should even be able to dream up new ways to use such technology, even before his counterparts come up with great ideas themselves. Refer to internet marketing for more information.

3. Solid Skills. The successful internet marketer has superb communication skills. Not only can he express his ideas, but he can explain, in laymen’s terms how web technology works. He has to be a great writer and must be able to write formally and informally, for experts and laypeople, and persuasively and factually. He has to be good at research as well, since he will have to understand those to whom he is marketing in order to be successful.

4. Lots of Experience. The online experience is driven by searching. When we need to find information, we use a search engine to hunt it down. Therefore, the successful online marketer must have experience in search engine optimization and marketing campaigns. He should also be a prolific blogger. One of his most important tasks will be to create high-quality content, build a loyal following, and participate in the conversations that take place around the content he publishes.

He should also be an expert in social media and how to use social networking for marketing purposes. And he won’t just stop at understanding them. He will be well-versed in the unique culture of each major social networking site and how to use it for its marketing capabilities.

5. A Penchant for Problem-Solving. The successful internet marketer loves to encounter and solve problems. He should constantly be looking for ways to do things better and faster, and he should have a hunger for learning new things all the time. He should enjoy the trial-and-error approach to conundrums and, therefore, should be very patient. Most of all, he should be interested in getting the job done right.

It’s a rare person who possesses all of these skills and abilities, but if you’re interested in becoming the most effective and efficient internet marketing professional you can be, this list is a great place to start building your skills and knowledge.
