The Power of Social Media Sites

November 8th, 2009

Social networking and online bookmarking have grown in popularity in the last five years. It can be a little tricky, however, when it comes to knowing which to choose. This is why many Internet users find social network reviews valuable. When reading these reviews, though, you might be surprised at how much variation there is in people’s opinions. Many folks defend their choice of online social networking sites vehemently. That’s probably because the site they fell in love with is one of the few they tried and all their time was taken up with one site before they knew what was happening. I’ve known a few who fought for their choice without even knowing the difference between business networking Web sites, social bookmarking sites or sites that offer online social networking just for fun. Many are not aware that there are also social networking sites, like Yuwie, that use micropayments to incentivize users to visit the site and promote it to others.

People often don’t know the distinction between one form of free social network and another because there is huge amount of cross-over in the platforms. As an example, Facebook can be used for either business networking or to just have fun. Thousands of user-created free Ning networking communities have sprung up all over the Internet, such as Paper Craft Planet. These type of social networking sites are significant because they’re created by users and focus on distinct interests. Interests can be as specific as book aficionados, who now have many online communities geared just to them. Online social networking sites like Bookcrossing have everything from chats, book reviews and online bookshelves. An innovative variant of online social networking is online social bookmarking, which has become very popular. Sites that feature social bookmarking, such as del.icio.us, allow logged-in users to save their online bookmarks for free. These sites are also great for people who are searching for information, because searches are greatly enhanced by tagging. Keyword tagging also makes social bookmarking sites of great interest to online marketers, who use them to garner backlinks for their blog posts and Web sites. The individual links aren’t that meaningful yet when a site has many of them, it can change the amount of search engine traffic it receives. Also, like with Digg, if a blog post is entered on one of these sites, high Google rankings can result if it is submitted properly and has the right keywords associated with it.

Blurring the line even further are sites like Mixx, which are set up for both social networking and social bookmarking. These sites are used for bookmarking but they also have legions of people who frequent them for marketing or socializing. You can make a lot of friends on these sites and as a bonus, material placed on them oftentimes ranks well in Google. This combination of tremendous benefits is the reason that Internet marketers flock to them.
