Increase Your Rankings With These Small Business SEO Tips

January 13th, 2010

For many small businesses, these hard economic times have been a make it or break it time. The price of everything is going up. This includes advertising. It’s getting harder and harder to find affordable advertising that actually has a decent ROI. Fortunately many small business owners already have a resource at hand that will help them do just that. It just needs some help. That would be your Website.

While many small businesses have Websites, very few are optimized so that local customers can find them. If the truth were known, most small business owners are too busy running their businesses to learn how to optimize their site. What’s worse, they may have paid good money to a so called SEO expert and be thinking their website is alread optimized when it isn’t. By taking a few minutes each week, you can improve your small business website’s rankings with these tips. A while back I talked to a Houston SEO Expert who said that he used the tips below to routinely rank small business websites so his Customers would dominate their local niches.

Start by removing any music or flash components you might have on your website. These components are not necessary for an optimized website. In fact, Flash and Javascript can actually hurt your SEO efforts. User study after user study have found that these two components turn off web users. Flash and Javascript add no SEO benefit to your website so why would you use it? Are you trying to entertain your visitors or do you want them to buy goods and services from you.

Next, make sure your main title reflects what your business is about. By failing to put your keywords in the Title, you failing to take advantage of a very important rule of SEO. If all your customers are local and you live in Seattle, your Title might say something like, Bob’s Widgets – Seattle’s Best Widgets.

If at all possible, there should be a page on your website for each product, or group of similar products, or services your company offers. Following the example I gave you above, your widget store might have pages that look like this; Bob’s Widget Outlet, Bob’s Groovy Widgets, Bob’s Round Widgets, etc.

When creating each of your product pages, make sure the specific keyword you’re using in the Title is actually worked into the content of the page. It doesn’t have to a lot, repeating the keywords 2 to 3 times on the page is enough. The last thing you want is a page to look spammy, so don’t repeat the keywords more than 2 to 3 times if it can be helped. That can get you into trouble with the search engines and make it look spammy to visitors. Image is everything. Any good Internet Marketing consultant will tell you that!

Next, it’s all about the links. Incoming links to your site is what will get you ranked high. Make sure you create anchor text links that point back to your main page as well as the inner pages for maximum benefits. A lot of small business owners will just use the words ‘Click Here’ when they make a link back to their site. This is okay, but a better way is to use the keyword that you used in your Title as the hypertext link. Any link pointing to your pages should have the keywords as the anchor text of the link. Make sure you change up the anchor text also. Having all the same anchor text links pointing to your site will get you penalized by Google. It’s known as Googlebombing.

Follow this advice and you should see your website start moving up in the search engines in a short amount of time. If you’re unsure about how to go about it, then search for a SEO Specialist that does know how. Just be sure you get one that will not take your money and run!

How to “Ethically” Spy on Your Competitor’s Every Move

January 8th, 2010

outsourcing how to training

Are you trying hard to keep an edge on your competitors, but they always seem to be one step ahead of you? You may be exposing yourself, and not even know it. The great news is that your competitors are probably doing the same thing.

For example, if you take one of the freelance type websites, you can see what others (and possibly your competitors) are up to just by going to Google.com and typing in “site:freelancewebsitenamegoeshere.com “keyword phrase”" (without the beginning and ending quotes). You will see all the projects that have that particular keyword phrase (for example “craftsman house floor plan designs“) in the description, just at that site. You can then run that same query on the next freelance site you’re monitoring.

There are several sites that you should monitor on an ongoing basis, including scriptlance DOT com, elance DOT com, and rentacoder DOT com, but there are actually a few others that can provide you with a tremendous amount of informaton.

There are also other ways in Google, where you can go, if you know your competitors website, and type in queries similar to that, basically, constraining it to one of these outsourcing sites.

So, “site:scriptlance.com” will constrain the search in Google to that one site and then, in quotation marks, type in their website URL, like competitorwebsite.com. Example: site:scriptlance.com “competitorwebsite..com.”

You will find all the projects that your competitors are putting out there. If you have any competitors in the industry, which I imagine every single one of us do, this is a great way to have insight into what is going on at their sites, what they have on horizon, and what they are building so you can counteract that, or address that, on your own site.

Conversely, you always want to protect your intellectual capital, and you want to protect any projects that you are currently doing for competitive reasons. There are many ways that you can put a project out there for bid, but protect your information where it won’t be indexed in Google, Bing, Yahoo!, or any of the major search engines. If you don’t do that you are opening yourself up to the same spying.

If you’ve not considered Outsourcing time-consuming tasks and special projects, its something that you should take note of. Finding reliable outsourced providers can decrease your fixed costs and free up your employees to allow more time to focus on more important, revenue-generating tasks such as marketing and promotion.

Outsourcing can provide a huge opportunity whereby you can find the very best providers, for a given task or project, and you’ll typically pay much less than you would if hiring a local part-time employee. Best of all you don’t have to worry about all the ongoing expenses that typically come with a traditional employee. Outsourced providers can be paid on a one-time basis for exactly the work that they complete. Its really a great way to manage the cash flow of your business and you’ll get exactly what you want.

Remove yourself from the day-to-day operations of your small business, website, online store or eCommerce store and outsource today!

How to Choose the Highest ROI Projects to Outsource For Your Small Business

January 5th, 2010

small business outsourcing

If you’re a small business owner like myself, you already know how important it is manage your (and your employees) time effectively.

There never seems to be enough time to complete all the special tasks and one-time projects that you’d like to, even if you know that they would provide a positive benefit to your small business and sales.

As such, one area that has become increasingly popular with small business owners is that of outsourcing tasks, projects, and in many cases, entire job roles to less expensive contracted providers in different locations around the world.

If you’re not familiar with outsourcing, its basically the process of “farming out” different time-consuming tasks or one time special projects to an outside provider, in a location and at a pay-rate that provides the maximum benefit to the small business owner.

There are a multitude of benefits to outsourcing, and here are several “high-return” projects that you can do, starting today:

Article/Content Writing

You will find that article/content writing is one of the primary items that you need to accomplish to build up traffic in search engines, and to build incoming links to your website. It’s very useful for a variety of things. In addition to rewriting product descriptions, it’s writing short articles, writing blog posts, writing content for your site, and then writing longer articles for posting at the various article directories.

Virtual Assistants

Virtual Assistants are invaluable. They do anything that you ask them to do and are typically very organized. They can do a variety of tasks, and it’s incredible the load they will lift off you.

Customer Service

Over time as your gain additional eCommerce training and your sites grow, customer service becomes a burden – Where’s my tracking number? Why is this product broken? Etc. – All those questions take a lot of human bandwidth. And, even though there’s some automation in place, it still takes a tremendous amount of time to deal with those.

If you’ve ever done customer service for a company, you know that many times it doesn’t allow you to do too much else. It’s a time consuming process. So, that’s one thing that I outsource. Now I don’t have to worry about all the day-to-day customer service calls and emails.

Research

Research is where outsourcing really shines, because it’s easy to provide a very detailed script as to what they’re looking for and the exact format that you want it provided in. If you have specific information that you need to have somebody search on Google for and categorize into a spreadsheet, where it’s more usable outsourcing’s the best way to get it done.

Time Intensive Tasks

One time intensive task is adding products, another might be editing products, another might be link building, and the list goes on. Anything that takes a large amount of time and bandwidth are excellent, either one time, or ongoing tasks, for outsourcers.

Repetitive Tasks

If you are into video marketing at all, you know that there are many video sites where you can submit product videos, or any type of video. You add a title, keywords, a description, you upload the file and then you move onto the next one.

To outsource you just need to create the account, give your outsourcer the videos through an FTP program, and they do it for you. It’s an excellent task for outsourcing.

Using outsourcing in your business can provide a huge ROI, and can many times, be the key component in differentiating your business from your competitors…

Finally, the only way to ensure that you’re receiving the maximum benefits from your outsourcing system is to become educated on small business outsourcing from a reputable outsourcing training institute like EcommerceSiteOwners.com

How to Outsource Your Most Dreaded Small Business Tasks

January 5th, 2010

If you own a small business or online eCommerce site, you understand how difficult it can be to find dependable (and affordable) employees.

If you’re like myself, you operate more like a one man (or one woman) show and do a “little bit of everything”, including customer service, shipping, bookkeeping, marketing, management, and everything in between.

While you’re busy doing these day-to-day type tasks, you just don’t have the time to work on the most important tasks…i.e. marketing your business.

Wouldn’t it be nice if you could offload your most time-consuming tasks, either on a one-time or ongoing basis, to someone for $1 to $4 an hour?

Well, the good news is that you CAN, although maybe not in the same way as you would expect. Typically, you would advertise for the job in your local newspaper classifieds or ask your friends and collegues if they knew anyone that was looking for that type of job.

There are several problems with this method:

1 – You are typically constrained by the employee pool/talent in your LOCAL market

2 – You will need to pay at least the minimum wage (currently ~ $7.25 per hour)

3 – You typically will need to hire the person(s) on a full or part time basis

4 – You will probably need to provide the person with an office to work in, desk, computer, internet connection, phone, and not to mention, paying all the other misc expenses/taxes related to hiring an employee

The good news is that there is an answer! And that answer is…. Outsourcing.

There are several, very specific places where you can go to find talented, hard-working people to do any and all tasks related to running and marketing your small business. In addition, you can employees that are located outside the United States or Europe where you can pay as little as $1 to $4 per hour, depending on the skills that you need.

In addition, not only can you find people to help you with ongoing tasks, but you can also find people to help you with very specific, one-time projects like unique home designs that require skills that you might not even have access to in your local area.

Think about the possibilities!

Franchising a Good Idea

December 9th, 2009

There is a saying that goes, “The men who made fortunes in business always precede, never follow, the crowd.”  This is true in the franchising industry.  At the very core of each franchise, particularly the widely successful ones, is a good idea, distinguishing it from the competition.  Indeed, franchising is an attractive and profitable business venture, most especially for small business owners and entrepreneurs.A primary cause of it is the franchise business can do well in good times and gets better in not-so-good times.Other than the business operations manual and technical support, a franchise has the potential to become popular when the idea behind it is good.  An example of a good idea that took off is online fast cash loans.  Then, these loans could be gotten from traditional sources such as banks and loan offices.  Today, everything is fast and convenient because—from the application process to the release of the money—it is done online in an hour or in a day, depending on the service provider.

Getting back to franchising, a good idea needs to be strengthened by certain business qualities to become a viable franchise business. The first step for entrepreneurs to take in order to try franchising is to learn the market.  They should determine if the market needs or wants the idea they came up with.  To be on the safe side, good business ideas revolve around a staple product, like food stuffs, or services frequently acquired by the general public. It is rather engaging to sell a basic product or service.  This, in turn, helps sustain the franchise business.  When this happens, more potential franchisees would be interested to get the franchise offered.

Another thing would-be franchisors and entrepreneurs should ensure is, whatever product or service they conceptualized, it must be affordable to their target market and packaged well.  Good prices and great packaging would make any business stand out and help attract loyal customers.  For instance, there are many laptops on the market today, even cheap ones, but some people would take out payday advances just to purchase the brand they want.  These people are convinced that their particular brand of laptop has the better specifications or the best technical support.  A good sign that a business idea could become a great franchise is if it belongs to an industry that has good prospects for growth. The things include health and medical care, food, communications, environment-friendly products, and entertainment.  Ideas related these industries are certain to become profitable franchise businesses.

Top Strategies For Marketing A Small Business

December 1st, 2009

Just because you have a small unit it doesn’t mean you cannot get great profits by marketing a small business. The strategic thinking required to get a big business or small business going is virtually the same with only the stakes being different. You can easily learn secrets that top business houses use and rake in high profits. Here are some simple tips to help you market your small business to great heights.

This is one thing that the entire business world can tell you with their eyes shut. There is nothing more compelling an advertisement than the inherent quality of the product or services sold. Focus all your energies into ensuring that whatever you are selling is top-notch and way ahead of your competition in terms of quality. You can limit your range of services and products to specialize first and later increase the range.

The Internet, for a small retail or service business, provides the greatest number of inexpensive marketing alternatives.  Your website can provide useful information about your location, hours of operation, specialties and provide contact opportunities.  You can use an email list to promote specials and to develop a long term relationship with your customers and your prospects.

In modern times, the Internet is a super advertising tool. Instead of focusing too much on content and design get a search engine optimization (SEO) professional to do up your website. SEO and keyword research  professionals get a site address to be picked up by all kinds of directories, newsletters and blogs etc across the world. They also ensure that your website gets linked among the top pages when users type related keywords in search engines. You can use SEO techniques to make the best of your target group and beat the competition.

Training your employees to market the business properly even while they are involved in routine processing is essential. One buyer picked off randomly who gets impressed by your products or services means a lifetime of permanent business relationship. And this buyer goes on to serve as a perfect publicity person too as he is bound to refer friends and family back to you. In case you have set up a website, you can also think about introducing a referral scheme for buyers like these.

For pumping more money into marketing you can save costs by outsourcing your manufacturing. This has become routine in the business world and some of the best industry leaders are doing so. You must also ensure that all paperwork and accounts are properly maintained so that your efficiency in handling the business as it grows is not affected.

Ensure that you have a good logo, catch line and advertising brochure in place. These serve as advertising markers in the minds of both your original customers and potential customers. Follow up every single customer suggestion and complaint with 100 per cent dedication. These steps can surely take your marketing of a small business to a new level.

Currently market Samurai happens to be the tool I use most for market research. In my business I literally use this tool day in day out, it really is that great. In fact in two of the videos within section two Steve Clayton provides you with an exact mythology for using market Samurai to obtain your target keywords.

He not only tells you the criteria to use in these videos, he actually shows you with an on-screen demonstration of finding those niche keywords, using his own search criteria within market Samurai. You are able to see Steve Clayton at work as he randomly finds target keywords.

The Benefits Of Having Your Own Business

October 12th, 2009

More and more people are being made redundant and unemployment rates are increasing on a daily basis. It can be a very difficult period in one’s life when the lose their job but people need to try and think in a positive manner. This is far from easy however however becoming down and depressed will not help the situation.

I was made redundant from a financial services corporation when I was aged twenty-two. Due to my age I was not in reality too bothered about the whole situation. I decided to think positively about the situation; in reality I did not even like the job that I was in, I found it rather boring. It has always been my goal to run my own business and this was a great opportunity for me to do this. Being made redundant turned out to be a blessing in disguise; I would probably have left the company within a few months in any case but this way they were actually paying me a redundancy package to leave!

I used this money to set up my own small business. I was going to run one-to-one stuttering therapy courses to help people to achieve fluency. I am a person who has managed to successfully overcome a stutter and I therefore felt that I had something to offer.

Working from home has many benefits as I have found to my own benefit. These include being your own boss and therefore not having to answer to other people. Choosing your own hours, choosing the amount of hours you work and the amount of holidays that you have. The rigid structure of set hours or working shifts no longer have to be an issue. This travel time is basically time wasted. I personally like to work late at night, where possible, as this is when I am able to concentrate to my maximum.

What I love the most about working from home is the ability to now attend all of the important days/events in my children’s lives. For example attending their school sports days, the christmas play, parents evenings, the visits to the dentists. People who are “employed” have to miss a number of these events due to a lack of holiday time or a lack of flexibility at their work.

I now have partnerships in other business ventures including one offering a DVD replication service and one offering web promotion advice.

I would recommend other people to set up their own small business and to work from home, you need to be self-disciplined but the benefits are huge.

Running a Small Business by yourself Presents some Difficulties

September 4th, 2009

25 years ago, starting a retail store was much easier. People regularly purchased staple items they needed. stores were not difficult to run and business was good. Store owners often felt like they were shining examples of individuals living the American dream. A time when neighborhood kids understood that if they ever needed a job, they could look to one of the many neighborhood establishments: candy store, drug store or local men’s shoes store business. Some of the shops had been owned by the same family for generations. However, in the current economy most of these mom and pop enterprises are closing their doors. They are losing the struggle in keeping their businesses afloat.

Over the years, most of these local businesses succeeded in the face of competition by large department store chains. They managed to compete because they provided individual customer service. That personalized service enabled them to establish a steady flow of loyal customers. The neighborhood shoe store, for example, would allow a customer to return a pair of shoes without a receipt, a gesture based on personal acquaintance with the customer and had faith that they would be back in the future. Firmly established customer service bonds are better than just offering a 10% off coupon. The ability to offer this type of personal customer service is one of the main tactics small retail outlets were able to use to gain leverage over and compete with large department stores.

Since the development of the internet, small retail stores find themselves striving to keep up not only with their local competitors, but also with a multitude of online stores. The impact of these cyber-stores was slow at first, however, as more and more people started to use the internet, they started making more purchases online; i.e., online shoe stores. There’s no more going to your neighborhood shoe store; people started buying shoes online. As internet retail stores started to see an increase in business, your local merchants experienced a sharp decline. While this is convenient for customers, this is taking a toll on local neighborhood stores.

In today’s economy, small merchants face an even bigger challenge in order to stay in business. With the banks in their current state, they’ve tightened the reins by decreasing merchant’s line of credit. This has cause local merchants to turn to drastic measures. For instance; your local comfort footwear store owner may have to turn to using part of their retirement fund to purchase inventory or fund the marketing budget. They don’t have a large funding base to draw on. However, with banks decreasing credit limits, they have fewer financial options. And with the decline in business they are looking at the strong possibility of a completely restructured life.
