Knowledge Base for Affiliate Marketers

October 12th, 2009

The fuel that feeds Internet business is information.  Only when data or recommendations are accurate and relevant is it of any use to the entrepreneur and become part of the necessary knowledge set.

This key concept is as true in the affiliate marketing industry as in any.  Particularly important to affiliate marketers are accurate and up to date guidance on niche selection, keyword research, traffic source and copywriting.  For a beginning affiliate marketer the learning curve is extremely steep, but even the most successful affiliate businesses must continually learn in order to keep up with the fast changing world of electronic communication.

While there are many venues that claim to provide all sorts of tips, offer all kinds of supposed secrets and sell so called essential tools, sometimes it is difficult to separate the hype from the genuine.  Many affiliate marketers have found a path to greater success provided by Anik Singal’s Affiliate Classroom.  Parts of that widely respected and frequently recognized source became somewhat outdated.  However, the good news is that Singal and his staff have spent the past two years totally revamping their system and turning it into something very similar to an online university for affiliate marketers.  The magnificent result is scheduled to be released in early to mid August, but they are building an informational contact list now.I urge you to get on that list quickly for Singal’s updates.  If you do not make it in time, be sure to see if there is still room on the waiting list.

Anik Singal was named one of the four “Young Entrepreneurs” in 2008 by Business Week Magazine in recognition of his tremendous success with his affiliate marketing business and his platform for teaching others about this tricky, but rewarding, business.  That is a tremendous honor.

Affiliate Classroom 2 gives you the whole picture–all of the context–of affiliate marketing.  Defining, refining or even expanding your niche is covered in all the necessary detail for a beginner or for an experienced marketer.  Keyword research, which is fundamental to all that we do in online marketing will come into much sharper focus for you.  Are you hoping to find creative ways to attract inexpensive or even free traffic?  You’ll discover traffic sources that had never occurred to you.

You can do yourself and your business and enormous favor at absolutely no risk by just signing up to get the information about this program directly from Singal.

Singal also does a favor for all affiliate marketers by not allowing anyone to use their own affiliate link to purchase the program for themselves.

So You Hope to Start an Internet Business?

September 12th, 2009

Anyone who wants to start an Internet business needs to consider what unique skills need to be learned before beginning such a venture.

The set of skills that you will need are not very intimidating. However the extent to which you need to be familiar with each of the knowledge areas depends upon how much of the work you plan to do yourself and how much you want to leave to professionals.

I assume you know about the legal requirements in your jurisdiction. If not, either check with your own authorities (you’ll find a great deal of information online) or consult an attorney. It is also advisable to check with your insurance professional and your accountant before actually making your business official.

While those concerns are important for any business, here the focus is about those skills essential for an Internet business. We’ll look at the knowledge areas that you or someone associated with your business, whether it is you, a partner, an employee or an individual or a company with which you contract to perform some of the specialized tasks involved.

Computer Skills: If you know how to use email and a word processing software, you can learn the rest of the technical things rather easily. In the early days of the web, you needed to know computer programming. Today, there are many software tools that make most things that you need to do quite easy. Of course, if you don’t have a lot of computer knowledge, you will be learning much more about computers along the way, but the best of the ready made tools tend to have excellent manuals and even video tutorials. If you are reasonably interested, diligent and willing to spend a bit of money on software, this is really no great worry. As you become more experienced, you will become faster at each computer task.

Search Engine Optimization: SEO, as this is usually called, has to do with attracting traffic to your website. Specifically it involves building and promoting your site in such a way that the major search engine will list your site, preferably very high in the rankings, when a web visitor enters a search term that is relevant to your business’s products, services or information.

Web Design: Someone, you or a consultant, has to decide on the appearance of your website, what it needs to be able to do and be able to build it in such a way that it facilitates reaching your goals. Designing for the Internet is not the same as designing for any other communication medium (television, print, etc.). One of the most important principles in web design is that pretty is not the same as effective. You need a business website that is easy to more around, where the information is clearly marked and that the user is facilitated in achieving your desired goal (for example, buying your product).

Writing for the Internet: There is almost no skill more important in Internet marketing than writing. If you are not a writer, don’t fret. There are a lot of good writers around who are experienced in writing for the web and who are amazingly inexpensive. You can actually find an Internet (or web) writing service that specializes in just the kind of writing you need. However, if you don’t have the budget to hire qualified writers as often as needed, or if you don’t have the skills to do your own writing, consider another venue for your business.

Patience: Remember that you will not see a great deal of money coming in immediately. Sure, there are plenty of scam artists out there that will tell you that they can sell you “secret” information that will lead to online riches within a week or a month. The truth is that operating an online business is no different from any other business in that way. It takes time and effort to develop. You can achieve your goals with time and money. You can achieve them faster with more time and more money, but you can’t become wealthy almost instantly. You need to be in this for the long haul in order to build a reliable, lasting, valuable business.

There are plenty of good resources on the Internet to help you learn the skills you don’t have and further hone those that you do. Most of the information you need is out there for free. Unfortunately, much of that information is wrong. You can increase your learning curve dramatically by purchasing high quality information or hiring consultants. However, if you are very patient, you can learn almost everything on your own and without much cost. In fact you can often sign up for worthwhile cost-free learning resources such as a how to start an Internet business course, which also should point you to other valuable resources, as well.

Fire Your Boss, Start an Online Business

July 23rd, 2009

With the bad economy and jobs being lost nationally, home based businesses are on the rise. People are fed up with the corporate world and are turning to online resources to start a business. Can the internet really provide a viable business? Historically we have seen the internet do amazing things and we have also seen it crash. Will there be another “Dot Com” crash? Well, sure there could be, but is that going to keep you from trying to tap into the multi-billion industry of ecommerce and web related opportunities? I know I wouldn’t.

Before you start an online business, consider the following;

  • Do you have money to start an online business?
  • Do you know anything about internet marketing?
  • What products will you sell?
  • Do you have your own products or will you sell other’s products?
  • How much money does your online business need to generate before you can quit your job?
  • Is your spouse or partner open-minded and willing to support you?
  • How many hours do you have to dedicate to an online business every week?
  • Will you have a partner or do it all yourself?
  • Do you have a business license?
  • Do you have any resources; web designers, marketing staff, programmers, etc?
  • Are you self motivated or do you need support?
  • Do you get bored easily?
  • Do you have any prior experience running a business?
  • Who is your competition?
  • Can you beat your competition?
  • And the list goes on…

Starting an online business is not much different than a starting a physical business. Although the costs can most times be much cheaper, the dedication and business strategies still apply. Many Online Marketers who claim to be Gurus, make the process of making money online sound so easy. In all honesty, it takes dedication, persistence and time. The average business owner will fail after just 2-3 years. The average internet marketer will give up after 6 months to 1 year. It’s easier to give up on an online business because you don’t have a store front and employees. Most online business start as sole proprietors out of a home office or garage. It’s so easy to walk away from yourself and your home office then to dump a physical building with employees. Truthfully, people confuse the two models, but they are exatly the same.

Starting your online business.

The best way to start an online business is to start with your hobbies. What do you like to do in your free time? What things do you know more about than most people? Is it photography, sports, knitting, wood carving, surfing, fashion, etc.?  Make a list of the three things you are interested in most and use that to build some ideas. Start with Amazon and checkout the magazine section. What magazines exist on your interests?  Also do some Google searches for your hobbie(s) and see what comes up. Keep in mind that other businesses who are already making money on your interests may have been around for awhile and have the authority in the market. How will you become the authority?

Do you have what it takes?

Starting an online business has many channels. When I say channels, I mean skills such as web design, coding, marketing, etc.? Do you have these skills or a team of people that you can tap into? It’s important to know that online businesses come with technical headaches. Everything from server problems, bugs in the code, hackers trying to take down your website, etc. The list of technical nightmares can go on forever so be prepared. If you are working with a team of talent, how will you mange them? You’ll need time to make phone calls, exchange emails and much much more. If you are planning to quit your job, how will you organize your business during the beginning?  This can be very challenging, so many people turn to virtual assistants and lead programs. You may need to get an extra phone line in your home office that can take voice mails any time of day.

Get Your Own Website

When you start your online business you will need your own website. It’s a good idea to have your own business branded website. Whether you have 10, 20 or 100 different websites, you still need a main business website with identifiable branding. Branding is everything when it comes to business and online ventures. If you hide under the radar and no one knows who you are because you mysteriously make websites late at night in your basement, you really have a lesser chance of success. So many people are afraid of putting their faces online and letting people know who they really are. Don’t be afraid of getting online and building your brand, this is what will make you more successful in the long-run.

Be the Professional

Be a professional 100% of the time and you will succeed. Even if you start a business based around your hobby and you don’t know everything there is to know, you can fake it. Haven’t your heard the famous line, “Fake it until you make it.” This goes for any business and everyone does it. There will always be times when you can’t answer every question and that is okay. You can always get back to your customers by phone or email at a later date. Thanks to the world wide web, you can find load of info online. You can ask questions on sites like Yahoo Answers or Google Groups. Your online business venture will include getting involved in message boards, so you will have an army of resources to rely on, when you need help. Don’t let a few bits of missing information stop you from looking like the guru, the answers are only a few clicks away.

Who are your threats? Do the research!

When you first start your online business, you will need to do a ton of research. Find out what your competitors are doing online. What kind of promotions do they have? Who is their target market? Are they doing any paid advertising on Google, Yahoo, or MSN? What kind of products do they sell? Can you offer something better?  These are all important things to consider. Being successful online is all about finding a good niche/market and beating the competition with better products and creative advertising methods. When they are walking through the front door, you will be walking in the back door with your bag of tricks. You’ll know everything about them, but they know nothing about you and then you dominate take over. I can’t stress enough how important it will be for you to do good market research and discover everything you can about your target market and competition. Taking the time will determine how successful you really are online.

Conclusion

Starting an online business can be challenging at times, but with the right research, time and well though out marketing plans, your business can be a success. The goal is to never give up and be persistent. Remember that successful people do big things, they don’t wait for anything. Starting an online business is both exciting and scary at the same time, but one thing is for sure, it can be more profitable than any day job you’d have otherwise. Opportunities online are endless, it’s just a matter of finding the one that fits you!
